Elephants are a truly wonderful species – they are intelligent and sociable – just two name a few of their qualities. But due to human greed (to be more specific, a misconception of traditional medicine and for the purpose of luxury / status symbol) these beautiful creatures are hunted down by poachers in big time numbers. Since 1900 no less than 8 million elephants have been put down by hunters and poachers, for their ivory. A recent study has shown that, on average, 33, 600 elephants have been destroyed each year in Africa between 2010 and 2012.
The black market is in full power, with strong demand coming especially from China. According to a recent investigation, Chinese people who work in Africa are all part of this illegal scheme, receiveing a significant part of the profits. The products are usually shipped to China from Mozambique, where it is legal to sell ivory (but not to export it, however). 126 tusks were discovered in a timber container belonging to Chinese company Tianhe. The company was fined and it re-opened using a different name shortly afterwards. On another note, a Chinese military officer was brought into custody in Zambia, after being caught while trying to smuggle 27 kilograms of ivory, with an estimated worth of $140, 000.
China, you have enough influence in the world to stop this illegal trade. Please get involved, as the tusks belong to the elephants and are not yours for keeping! We, the undersigned, demand a crackdown on all these illegal activities come from China. Take action now and save the wildlife!
