Nikki Beach Club is one of the most popular hanging spots in Phuket, possibly Thailand’s most known tourist attractions. Affluent people looking to let their hair down can be seen drinking pricey champagne and dining fancy foods. The celebration of life is in full swing at this resort.
But much to everyone’s dismay, a baby elephant was recently called in to attend a party. The adorable creature appeared in the club’s photo gallery serving champagne, giving rides to movie stars and models, ‘dancing’ with the party people, spraying swimming pool water at punters and even being used as a prop in a weird marriage proposal.
The management of the Nikki Beach resort was quick to pull out the photos, but the damage had already been done. These people fail to understand that this is hardly the way a baby elephant would party. This animal would rather be with his tribe, in the jungle and certainly would not fancy carrying wealthy people on its fragile spine solely for ‘entertainment’ purposes.
The Nikki Beach Club is a partnership between the Penrod family and the Castlewood Inc., a group based in Singapore. They have opened beach clubs in some of the most luxurious places on Earth, including Miami, Mallorca, Marbella and St. Tropez. On their website, they take great pride in corporate social responsibility, as they have financially helped various charities including the Soi Dog foundation.
As a reputable club, these owners should have known better. This blatant mistreatment of elephants is totally wrong and unethical.
We, the undersigned, hereby urge the management of the Nikki Beach Club in Phuket, Thailand, to to stop using elephants and any other wildlife as props for their entertainment facility and continue their corporate social responsibility scheme by donating to a organization that aims to improve the welfare of these wild animals in the country (for instance, Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand – but there are many more).
Please sign the petition and help the elephants in Phuket live a better life!
Thank you for your support.
