Several newspapers have reported about the proposed Sabal Trail pipeline methane frack-gas that is set to run from northeast Alabama to south-central Florida. Several routes were on the table, it looks like the developing company has already made up its mind and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (also known as FERC) has already approved the route.
The problem with the route is that it will maximize the taking of private property belonging to residents of the great state of Georgia. It is all done in the name of private profit, as officials themselves have pointed out numerous times.
Moreover, the proposed route will run across miles of unstable karst terrain that could potentially cause massive sinkholes areas. This will only add to the chances of that the construction collapses, catches fire and drinking water in the nearby areas is contaminated. Furthermore, the compressor station site will be installed in a residential neighborhood mainly populated by African-Americans. This construction will only lead to increased pollution of the Dougherty County’s air.
As we speak, the pipeline is missing several state and federal permits, essential for the project to continue, such as water quality, air and wetlands. The FERC permit has thus been challenged. In spite of the flaws presented above, the Deal Administration is looking to go ahead and give the project state easements under several important rivers in Georgia – such as the Chattahoochee, Flint, and Withlacoochee
Local legislators have done a good job keeping these easements separated from the annual Senate Resolution to convey property easements (SR 954 in 2016). However, after pressure from the Governor’s office, they were put up for discussion at the House Committee.
Your support is urgently needed. Please get in touch with your State Representatives and ask them to vote ‘NO’ on SR 954 until all Sabal Trail easements are completely scrapped.
We will never accept for our private property and natural resources to be given to a greedy, profit-oriented company based in Houston, Texas.
