There is no question that dog is indeed man’s best friend. A dog is more than just a pet. He is there to support and confort his owner always, during times of joy, but also during sad moments. One thing is certain in life: your dog will never let you down and will always be near you.
The magnificent relationship between humans and dogs dates back almost 3 000 years ago. Dogs do not only serve as pets, they have also helped humans as service, police or theraphy dogs.
However, there is something missing in order to fully recognize the importance dogs play in a human’s life: a world dog day.
I am asking the readers of this petition to show their support and urge the United Nations to declare a WOLRD DOG DAY as soon as possible.
In my view, the perfect day to pick this celebration would be November 10, to honour Hachiko’s birthday. For those who are not familiar with the story, Hachiko is one of the most loyal dogs on this planet. His life story has even been put on screen – most recently in the movie called ‘Hachicko – A Dog’s Tale’, starring Richard Gere.
Hachiko proceeded to wait for no less than 10 years for his owner to come back at a railway station in Japan. His master would never come back because he had died. But that never stopped Hachiko from hoping his adored owner will come back one day.
Given the fact that Hachiko spent his entire life in Japan, I am convinced that the most suitable person to deliver this proposal to the UN would be Japan’s ambassador to the UN, Mr. Motohide Yoshikawa.
It is my firm belief that a World Dog Day will help raise awareness on the negative issues that surround man’s best friend – such as dog eating festivals that are held in many parts of Asia – and strengthen the relationship between humans and canines in other countries. It will also send a strong message to enforce animal welfare laws globally.
Please note that certain countries do have a National Dog Day – for instance, in the US, this celebration is held on August 26. However, a day declared by the United Nations would indeed mean that the celebration is taken to a global level. There is a International Labor Day on May 1st; there is the International Women’s Day on March 8th; it is time for an International Dog Day on November 10th!
